Hand Sanitizers and Masks out of essential commodities
Background of the hype:
The government declared masks and hand sanitizers as essential commodities after the exorbitant increase in prices. It was mainly due to the sudden spike in the demand for these products due to the pandemic coronavirus. People were complaining about being overcharged for masks and hand sanitizers.
The government had no other resort than listing both the products under the Essential Commodities Act 1955. In order to restrict possible the steeping increase of the prices of the products. The act is strict against such extortionate pricing during the outbreak of pandemic and emergency.
The government decided to bring both the products under the list of essential commodities in the end of March. This was the result of exorbitant increase in the price of masks going up to Rs. 450 and a minimal quantity of hand sanitizers went to as high as Rs. 150.
Quality products availability hindered:
Due to governments action of listing the products under essential commodities act few manufacturers resorted to inducing substandard and adulterated products. This not only affected the precious health of the consumers but also hindered the sales and availability of quality products in the market. The consumers could not differentiate between the reasonable pricing behind the quality products. Also they had to endure overcharge for sub-standard products.
In some cases methanol was added with ethanol in hand sanitizers. It is a chronic cases of adulteration as methanol is a toxic form of alcohol.
